The Bay of Bengal has erupted again throwing up a low-pressure area on Wednesday, promising a fresh round of wet spell for peninsular India during the rest of the week.

This came a day after when vigorous monsoon conditions ruled over Konkan-Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada and north interior Karnataka even as a causative circulation faded out in the Arabian Sea.

These very same areas and those south of it would come once again under a belt of heavy rain progressing west-northwest across the peninsula during the rest of the week.

The ‘low’ is forecast to cross the coast close to Chennai and adjoining south coastal Andhra Pradesh coast by Saturday, bringing heavy rain into these areas.

The rainfall is expected to scale up in intensity over central peninsula by Sunday in Telangana, Rayalaseema, north interior Karnataka, Marathwada and Madhya Maharashtra.

Successor system

From here, the ‘low’ will push towards Konkan-Goa, Mumbai, south Gujarat and west Madhya Pradesh sweeping the region with moderate to heavy torrents.

By September 3, the system would weaken and exit into the northeast Arabian Sea off Gujarat, but not before signalling the formation of a successor rain-bearing system off the Odisha coast. The US Climate Prediction Centre sees this system wheeling towards Madhya Pradesh and ending up in torrents over west Madhya Pradesh, east Rajasthan and Gujarat during the first week of September.

The rest of north-west India and parts of east India may also receive rain due possibly to interaction with itinerant western disturbances moving in and out across the plains in the region.

Rain outlook

Meanwhile, the India Met Department said that the latest ‘low’ will bring heavy to very heavy rain to coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, north and south interior Karnataka on Thursday. Heavy rain is likely over Rayalaseema, Konkan-Goa, and coastal Karnataka.

As for Friday, heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast for Telangana and coastal, north interior and south interior Karnataka. Heavy rain is likely over coastal Andhra Pradesh, Konkan-Goa, Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada.
