To assuage agitating dairy farmers across the country, the Union government on Tuesday decided to provide 10 per cent incentive on export of milk and milk products, Highways and Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari said here.
The decision was taken at a meeting attended by Gadkari, interim Finance Minister Piyush Goyal, Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh, and Finance Secretary Hasmukh Adhia, among others.
The Agriculture Minister, who was in Guwahati on Tuesday, participated in the meeting through video conferencing, Gadkari said.
Milk producers in many States have been protesting against falling procurement prices. In Maharashtra, for instance, farmers were spilling milk by emptying tankers on road.
The government has been toying with the idea of including milk powder in mid-day meal scheme, Gadkari said during a media interaction.
On Tuesday, Gadkari said that he and Goyal will meet External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to explore the possibility of India providing milk powder as partially as aid to countries in Africa where it currently provides financial aid.
The government also plans to explore trade arrangements with countries such as Indonesia and Bangladesh which face shortage of milk, he said.
In a related move, the minister said, the government has also decided to incentivise onion exports.
