Another round of isolated heavy rain is forecast for Coastal Tamil Nadu, Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam, and Rayalaseema midweek next week as a fresh low-pressure area is expected to form over central parts of the south-west Bay of Bengal by Saturday and move in towards the coast, not too long after erstwhile cyclone Fengal dumped flooding rain over these very areas.
India Meteorological Department (IMD) located a parent cyclonic circulation over the equatorial Indian Ocean and adjoining south-east Bay, around where predecessor cyclone Fengal had originated. In near replication of its track, the building ‘low’ is likely to move west-northwest and reach the south-west Bay off Sri-Lanka–Tamil Nadu coasts in a week’s time.
No intensification is seen for now, but isolated heavy rain is forecast for the above-mentioned areas on Wednesday and Thursday. This is even as a remnant cyclonic circulation from Fengal fades out to the other side of the peninsula over the south-east and adjoining south-west Arabian Sea, away from Lakshadweep, after a record-breaking stint and bountiful rain over Tamil Nadu.
Watch for the fresh ‘low’ came a day after the IMD issued an extended weather outlook for the next two weeks. According to this, the ongoing week (December 5 to 11) is likely to witness normal to above-normal rain over the South Peninsula and adjoining Central India. It is likely to be below-normal over the rest of the country.
As for the week that follows (December 12 to 18), too, rain is likely to be normal to above normal over most parts of the South Peninsula and Central India while below normal over North-West, East & North-East India. businessline had hinted about likelihood of extended rain for South Peninsula more than once in past few columns.
Meanwhile, the past 24 hours, ending on Friday morning, saw moisture left behind by remnant Fengal circulation set up thunderstorms and rain at many places over Coastal Karnataka, a few places over Kerala and Mahe and Andaman & Nicobar Islands, and at isolated places over Konkan and Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal, interior Karnataka, Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam, Rayalaseema, Telangana, and Lakshadweep.
