Heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy falls may be unleashed over North Coastal Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday while it would be heavy to very heavy over parts of Coastal Odisha and Coastal West Bengal as severe cyclone ‘Asani’ toys with the coast and recurves towards Coastal West Bengal.
India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the severe cyclone may start weakening from the morning and reach close to Kakinada-Vishakhapatnam coasts. From here, it may recurve slowly north-north eastwards and emerge into the seas off North Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. It may weaken into a depression by Thursday morning.
The 24 hours ending on Tuesday morning saw heavy to very heavy rain lash Mahanga and Bishnupur-10(in cm) each; Naraj and BP Ghat-9 each; Barkote, Bhadrak, Bhandari, Pokhari, and Sonari-7 each; Salt Lake-6; Haldia-4; and Canning-3. Heavy rainfall was observed at parts of Odisha, Manipur and Assam. Total suspension of fishing operations has been advised over the West-Central Bay of Bengal on Wednesday and over the North-West Bay until Thursday. Fishermen out at sea have been advised to return to coast, the IMD warning statement said.
Rain for South, East Coast
The ‘Asani’ effect is now spread across the South Peninsula and along the East Coast apart from North-East India after the severe cyclone dragged westerlies to south-westerlies from both the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea and associated circulations and troughs over land triggered a chain of thunderstorms.
The remnant of ‘Asani’ will bring fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds to North-East India during the next five days. Isolated heavy rainfalls are forecast over Arunachal Pradesh on Friday and Saturday and over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura until Saturday. Isolated to very heavy rainfall is likely over Assam and Meghalaya until Friday.
Heat wave may revive
Scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall is likely over Kerala, Mahe, Lakshadweep, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Coastal and South Interior Karnataka while it would be isolated to scattered over Telangana, Rayalaseema, North Interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal during the next five days. Isolated heavy rainfall likely over Telangana on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, weakening of Asani may also allow heat wave conditions to flare up over parts of East and West Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, North Madhya Maharashtra, Vidarbha, South Haryana, Delhi, South Punjab, and Jammu Division during the next few days.
