Heaviest rain kicked up by the well-marked low-pressure area will continue to be sprayed over the waters of south-west Bay of Bengal on Thursday, according to the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts | Photo Credit: www.meteologix.com/in
The low-pressure area over south-west Bay of Bengal became ‘well marked’ on Wednesday afternoon, and is now expected to move in a north-west direction towards north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh coasts by Thursday, an India Meteorological Department (IMD) update said. It will have increasingly lesser grip on regional weather over Tamil Nadu from Thursday.
The system is likely to change direction and move nearly northwards along Andhra Pradesh coast till Friday, the IMD said, confirming its track away from the Tamil Nadu coast. During the 24 hours ending Wednesday morning, it brought rain at a few places over coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam; Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal; and Kerala & Mahe.

Heavy rain was reported from Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal and Andaman & Nicobar Islands during this period. Significant amount of rain (in cm) recorded included Car Nicobar-IAF-10 and Nancowry-5 (both in Andaman & Nicobar Islands) and Rajapalayam-9 and Srivilliputhur-7 (Virudhunagar, Tamil Nadu).
An IMD outlook for next few days said isolated heavy to very heavy rain is likely over coastal Andhra Pradesh on Thursday and isolated heavy rain on Friday. Isolated heavy rain is also likely over Rayalaseema on Thursday while the larger meteorological subdivision of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal may stay quiet for the most part on these days.
Meanwhile, a fresh incoming western disturbance travelling towards Pakistan and North-West India was seen as a trough leaving south-east Iran on Wednesday, and preparing to enter Afghanistan, but along a lower and deeper latitude than forecast earlier. It has thus triggered the formation of an induced cyclonic circulation over south-west Rajasthan farther ahead to the east.
The IMD has warned of dense fog in isolated pockets of Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh in night/morning hours on Thursday. Cold wave to severe cold wave conditions may persist at isolated places of Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and East Rajasthan while cold wave conditions are likely over isolated pockets of Jammu-Kashmir, Ladakh; Haryana and Chandigarh and West Rajasthan. Ground frost may occur at isolated places over Himachal Pradesh and East Rajasthan.
