Thunderstorms accompanied with squall and hail are being forecast for North-West India, while heavy showers are indicated for parts of East and North-East as pre-monsoon conditions establish across the country.

The fairly widespread to widespread precipitation over the hills in the North-West and scattered to fairly widespread rainfall over the adjoining plains would continue until Thursday, the India Met Department (IMD) said in its bulletin.

Isolated thunder squalls and hailstorms may lash the region on Friday, the forecast said.

Damage to rabi wheat

High winds accompanied by hail have, in the past, brought harm to the rabi wheat harvested and still lying in the fields over the North-West.

Agency reports said that rain accompanied by high wind and isolated hailstorm lashed Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh on Monday, drenching harvested produce in grain markets and damaging ripe wheat and other winter crops in farms.

The rain has delayed harvesting by a week already. Farmers are worried that wet wheat would not be procured until it dries in the next few days. They fear they would be forced to pay more for harvesting the flattened crop.

Kal Baisakhi weather

Meanwhile, to the East and North-East, fairly widespread rain has been forecast for the next four to five days as the Kal Baisakhi season entrenches accompanied by a typical violent weather.

The IMD has said that incoming western disturbances — which triggers violent squalls, dust storms, lightning and thundershowers — will continue to be active in the North-West as well as the East for the next 4-5 days.

Extended forecast for three days from Wednesday till the weekend spoke about the possibility of scattered to fairly widespread rain over the hills of North-West India and North-East India.

The peninsula, North-West, Central and East India are expected to witness isolated to scattered precipitation during this period. The rest of the country may witness dry conditions.
