Ganga conservation is set to get a fillip with Finance Minister Arun Jaitley setting aside a huge sum of ₹2,037 crore for an integrated Ganga conservation mission called Namami Gange.

“Substantial amount of money has been spent in the conservation and improvement of the Ganga, which has a very special sacred place in the collective consciousness of this country. However, the efforts have not yielded desired results because of the lack of concerted effort by all the stakeholders,” he said, while presenting the Budget.

Jaitley has also set aside another ₹100 crore for “beautification” of river ghats at Kedarnath, Haridwar, Kanpur, Varanasi, Allahabad, Patna and Delhi, all religious destinations.

The BJP Government is also all set to harness contributions for its Ganga conservation mission from the non-resident population, with a new NRI Fund.

The Government’s long-held decision to link important rivers in the country also found space in the Budget, with a ₹100-crore allocation for Detailed Project Reports on the subject.
