Egypt’s military rulers have issued an anti-graft law that could pave the way for banning some former members of Hosni Mubarak’s ousted regime from seeking public office.
The law’s timing suggests it was a concession to protesters who have been clashing with security forces for three days. Twenty-four people have been killed.
A text of the law published by Egypt’s state news agency MENA on Monday said it will punish those convicted of corruption. They will be banned from holding government posts and voting or running in elections for up to five years.
Still, the law falls short of the demands of many protesters, who wanted a blanket ban on former regime members running for office.
