GE Healthcare, Concept non-invasive solution to treat uterine fibroids

GE Healthcare Indian and Chennai-based Concept Medicare have unveiled a magnetic resonance-guided ultrasound solution which promises non-invasive treatment for several procedures including uterine fibroids in women.

The solution – ExAblate2100 – was launched by Mr Jacob A. Kumaresan, Executive Director, WHO India.

Concept Medicare, a private company set up in 2008, has imported the equipment to treat uterine fibroids. It has established a medi-care centre with the latest magnetic resonance-guided ultrasound facility, which the company says is “a safe, non-invasive, no-hole, no-scar surgery and effective for eliminating uterine fibroids.”

While traditional fibroid treatment involves surgery and long recovery time running to several months, MRI-guided ultrasound solution claims to offer radiation and scar-free painless treatment. Apart from uterine fibroid, the solution also claims to offer treatment for prostate cancer, liver tumour, bone metastases, breast cancer and stroke.

“The solution is highly popular in Western countries. The technology is certified as clinically acceptable, having passed the critical standards of FDA, USA and is being offered in India (in Tamil Nadu) for the first time,” according to Concept Medicare.

General Electric Company and INSIGHTEC are the manufacturers of the equipment. Wipro GE Medical Systems, a joint venture between General Electric and Wipro, is the supplier of the equipment across South Asia.

Incidentally, a couple of weeks ago, Apollo Hospitals announced the launch an MRI-guided ultrasound solution from Philips Healthcare for non-invasive treatment of uterine fibroids.
