The Finance Ministry has imposed a definitive anti-dumping duty on all imports of Pentaerythritol from China.

Pentaerythritol, an organic compound, is principally used in the surface coating industries. It finds application in the manufacture of alkyl resin, plasticizers, printing inks, synthetic rubber, stabilizers for plastics, detonators, explosives, pharmaceuticals and synthetic lubricants.

An anti-dumping duty of $515 per tonne has been imposed on Pentaerythritol imports from China, according to a revenue department official. The duty will be in force for five years unless revoked earlier.

The latest revenue department move follows recommendation by the Designated Authority in the Commerce Ministry that definitive anti-dumping duty be continued on Pentaerythritol imports from China for five more years. The Finance Ministry had earlier in April 2006 imposed definitive anti-dumping duty on Pentaerythritol imports from China and Sweden.

In March this year, the Designated Authority had, after a sunset review, also recommended that the existing anti-dumping duty on all Pentaerythritol imports from Sweden be discontinued. This has now been accepted by the revenue department.

Kanoria Chemicals & Industries Ltd had requested continuation of investigation for review and enhancement of anti-dumping duty in force concerning imports of Pentaerythritol from China and Sweden.

Asian Paints Ltd is another manufacturer of Pentaerythritol, but largely a captive consumer.
