The mining leases granted to some cement companies in Andhra Pradesh are under the scanner of the Central Bureau of Investigation in the illegal assets case of Kadapa MP Mr Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy.
The investigating agency quizzed Ms Sabita Indra Reddy, Minister for Home, Government of Andhra Pradesh for about four hours on Friday on mining leases granted during 2008-09. Ms Sabita Indra Reddy was the Minister for mining under in the Congress Government led by then Chief Minister and father of Mr Jaganmohan Reddy, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy.
“It is believed that some cement companies benefitted from the investments they made in Bharathi Cements founded by Mr Jaganmohan Reddy and his other firms by way of mining leases,” a source in CBI told Business Line . The India Cements Ltd and Dalmia Cements had minority stakes as promoters in Bharathi Cements when it was set up and later exited the firm when Mr Reddy sold 51 per cent to Vicat of France for an undisclosed sum.
Penna Cements also came under the CBI radar and the company management was already summoned by CBI a couple of times earlier.
