This will be the decade of leadership development in the corporate world and companies are looking for effective leaders who can bring about desired results, according to Mr K. Anil Kumar, Senior Manager (Regulatory Affairs), Karnataka Power Transmission Company Ltd (KPTCL), here.

Delivering a lecture on leadership, organised by the BL Club and sponsored by Syndicate Bank for the students of Bishop Cotton Academy of Professional Management, he said that leadership was the most discussed topic in the management world.

A simplistic and effective way of looking at leadership is by looking at it as a process of achieving results through influencing others.

Manager and leader

Sharing from his experiences of working with various leaders, bureaucrats and technocrats, Mr Anil Kumar spoke of the difference between a manager and a leader.

While a manager controls or directs people or resources in a group according to principles or values that have already been established, a leader sets new directions or a vision for a group and spearheads that new direction.

Banking sector opportunities

Explaining the difference between a positional leader and a real leader, he said that a positional leader is a figure head without setting any new directions, whereas a real leader is known for his effectiveness.

Mr S. Ganesh, Customer Relations Manager, Syndicate Bank, said that ample opportunities existed in the banking sector and urged the students to refine their managerial skills and grab opportunities, whenever it was presented to them.

He also spoke about “SyndYuva”, and “SyndVidya”, products launched by Syndicate Bank for the students, which will benefit them immensely.

He highlighted the benefits of education loan offered to students.

Dr Ranji Jacob, Principal, Bishop Cotton Academy of Professional Management, welcomed the gathering and introduced the guests.
