2012 has been the safest year for the global airline industry, the airline watchdog body International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced on Wednesday.
“As of November 30, there was one accident per 5.3 million flights. If this trend continues this will be the third year in a row (for aviation safety). If you take a flight every day odds are you would fly 14,000 years without being in an accident,” Senior Vice-President. Safety, Operations and Infrastructure, Guenther Matschnigg, said at the Global Media Day programme.
IATA statistics show that as on November 30, there were five hull losses against 11 at the same time last year. A hull loss is when an aircraft is damaged beyond the point at which is considered economical to repair.
