With domestic air travel booming, three airlines have carried more than 10 lakh passengers each in a month for the first time. This is according to the air passenger data for May 2011 released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

According to the data, 54.92 lakh passengers were carried by the domestic carriers in the month of May 2011, an increase of about 14.8 per cent in the corresponding month last year. The three airlines which have carried more than 10 lakh passengers include Jet Airways, Kingfisher Airlines and IndiGo.

While Kingfisher has carried more than 10 lakh passengers in May 2010 and May 2009, Jet Airways and IndiGo saw a significant increase. In May 2009, Jet Airways had carried 6.16 lakh passengers while in May 2010 the airline had carried 8.69 lakh passengers. Although details of the number of passenger carried by each airline was not revealed, at more than 10 lakh passengers, Jet Airways has registered a growth of almost 15 per cent in the number of passengers carried in May 2011 against May 2010.

Delhi-based low cost carrier IndiGo had carried 5.4 lakh passengers in May 2009, 7.53 lakh passengers in May 2010, and according to the DGCA statistics it has carried more than 10 lakh passengers in May 2011. Thus, the growth in the number of passengers carried by the airline is approximately 32 per cent.

The three airlines with more than 10 lakh passengers in the month of May also form the top three in terms of market share with Kingfisher Airlines at 20 per cent, IndiGo at 19.9 per cent and Jet Airways at 18.5 per cent (not including JetLite).
