In a notice to trade, Maersk, the Danish shipping giant, has announced levy of $70/FEU piracy risk surcharge on shipments moving between India and West Asia, according to the shipping industry sources.

“In view of increased piracy activity and in light of our continuous efforts to prevent piracy attack and to protect our crew and cargo in the intra-Gulf region, we introduce an emergency risk surcharge to mitigate the expenses incurred on securing and maintaining reliable and safe services”, the notice says.

It might be recalled that in May the shipping line had increased its piracy surcharge to $200-500 per FEU from $100-400 on cargo passing through the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean.
