The Dakshina Kannada district administration is in the process of submitting a proposal to the State Government on the need for acquiring 150 acres of land for the expansion of runway at Mangalore airport, according to Mr Channappa Gowda, Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district.

Addressing presspersons here on Thursday, he said the Revenue Department will conduct valuation of the land to be acquired for the process. Based on the valuation, the district administration will send a proposal to the Infrastructure Department on the expansion of runway at Mangalore airport.

(It may be mentioned here that the runway of the Mangalore airport has to be extended by another 1,000 ft for it to get the status of international airport and to handle bigger aircraft.

The current length of the runway is 8,037 ft.

The Karnataka Budget for 2011-12 had earmarked Rs 15 crore for the runway extension work.)

Ring road

On the proposed ring road project for Mangalore city (which has been named as Mangala Corniche), he said that Rs 2 crore has been earmarked for conducting a survey on the proposed project. The Mangalore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) will call for tenders for conducting the survey . The tender conditions were approved recently, Mr Gowda said.

Plastic-free beaches

Plans are there to make Panambur and Tannirbavi beaches in Mangalore as plastic-free zones from July 15.

Steps will be taken to collect solid waste from the doorsteps in urban local body jurisdictions in Dakshina Kannada district. After collecting them, they will be disposed off scientifically, he said. Nearly 75 per cent of solid waste in Mangalore City Corporation limits is being collected from the doorsteps of people, he added.
