The Director General of Shipping, who is closely monitoring the situation, has engaged SMIT, a global salvage firm, to assess the situation. “The SMIT team is not being able to board the ship because of bad weather and efforts are being made to board the ship from helicopter and explore the possibility of re-floating it,” the Union Shipping Minister, Mr G.K. Vasan, told media persons. He, however, said there is no threat of pollution or threat to the sea link in Mumbai. “It is an empty ship without any cargo or bunkers,” he said, adding that further plans can be finalised only after the SMIT team gives its assessment.
