Demand for travel on several sectors in South India drove the growth for SpiceJet’s super sale promo.

The discount offer, which ended on February 1, offered 500,000 tickets at prices starting at ₹1,499. Passengers who booked their tickets under the scheme have to complete their travel between February 14 and June 30.

The Vijayawada-Hyderabad sector emerged as the second highest in terms of demand. “Being the new capital of Andhra Pradesh, Vijayawada is a big hub for automobiles, FMCG, pharma and educational institutions,” the airline said explaining the surge in booking numbers on this sector. Besides the surge in demand in South India, the airline saw the highest demand on the New Delhi-Srinagar route.

In addition, the Pune-Hyderabad sector also witnessed huge demand which the airline said was due to corporates and passengers travelling to the Shirdi shrine.

The Hyderabad-Madurai sector also saw a spike in demand probably because Madurai is a tourist destination, the airline said.

Airline officials declined to get into specifics of the sale merely saying that most of the southern routes which had seen a spike in demand were not the largest routes in terms of frequency of daily flights that the airline operates. The sale was the first this year by SpiceJet, keeping up with last year’s tradition when it started the year with a discounted sale offer.
