Reversing the trend of the previous months, domestic airlines registered a 7.25 per cent increase in passengers flown in July at 48.66 lakh, as compared to 45.37 flown in the same period last year.
IndiGo Airlines remained the market leader having flown 14.45 lakh passengers in July, with Jet Airways taking second spot, carrying 9.59 lakh passengers, the latest data released by the Director General of Civil Aviation show.
The position of Jet Airways will improve further if the passenger carriage of JetLite, its subsidiary which carried 2.74 lakh passengers in July, is also considered. The two airlines, however, report separate passenger carriage to the DGCA.
Air India carried 9.34 lakh passengers in July while SpiceJet carried 8.50 lakh passengers and Go Air carried 4.04 lakh passengers.
In July, the domestic industry paid about Rs 20 lakh as compensation to passengers denied boarding or those affected by flight delays and cancellations.
