The Government plans to provide road connectivity to 50 minor Ports in the next five years.
“The Government envisages to undertake a special package for development of road connectivity for about 50 minor Ports in the 12th Five-Year Plan (2012-17),” Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways Jitin Prasada informed the Lok Sabha in a written reply today.
However, pending finalisation of the 12th Five-Year Plan, the Scheme could not be considered for inclusion under Annual Plan 2012-13 for the Ministry, Prasada said.
NHAI (National Highways Authority of India) received proposals for development of road connectivity to six non-major ports in Odisha (Astranga, Baliharachandi, Gopalpur, Dhamara, Chudamani and Subarnarekha), from the State Government of Odisha.
“Initially, feasibility study for four lane connectivity to these non-major ports was awarded to two consultants in February, 2012,” he said.
He added that the State Government has decided to prepare feasibility study report.
“It is premature for indicating any time frame for completion of these projects,” Prasada said.
Apart from 50 such ports, there are 12 major or big-size ports - Mumbai, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust, Kolkata (with Haldia), Chennai, Visakhapatanam, Cochin, Paradip, New Mangalore, Marmagao, Ennore, Tuticorin and Kandla.
