Nine countries have been selected as the 2025 partners for the IMO GreenVoyage2050 programme, the International Maritime Organization’s flagship technical cooperation programme for the implementation of the 2023 IMO GHG Strategy.
Five countries — Bangladesh, Egypt, Ghana, Mexico, and Nigeria — will receive support for the development of national action plans to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from shipping. This includes capacity-building workshops and expert guidance.
Four countries — India, Indonesia, Türkiye, and Vietnam — will receive support in undertaking feasibility studies for pilot projects to reduce emissions, says an IMO release.
The chairpersons of the world’s biggest shipping industry organisations gathered on February 6 in Athens to discuss topics including greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction and the impact of geopolitics on shipping. By far the most important topic on the agenda was how the industry, and the international community, can help end the unjust treatment and criminalisation of seafarers.
At the meeting, chaired by BIMCO President Nikolaus H Schües, the round table of international shipping associations unanimously agreed that awareness of seafarer safety, rights and treatment must be increased beyond the shipping industry, according to a media release.
