The Government today said Paradip Port, one of the 12 major ports in the country, handled a record 8.06 million tonnes (MT) of cargo in July.

“The cargo handling growth story of Paradip Port continues with a quantum jump in the cargo handled in July this year with a record throughput of 8.06 MT in a single month surpassing the earlier record of handling 7.61 MT cargo in March 2016,” Shipping Ministry said in a statement.

The major growth was contributed with addition of 8 lakh tonnes of POL, 6 lakh tonnes of imported coking coal and 6 lakh tonnes of other cargo like imported lime stone, dolomite.

“About 60 per cent of the extra 2 million tonnes of cargo came from non-mechanised cargo operations in the monsoon which actually helped the port to achieve the record cargo handling ...incidentally, in the 4 months (April—July) of 2016-17, the port handled 28.65 MT of cargo compared to 24.34 MT in the corresponding 4 months of FY2015-16 witnessing a growth of 17.75 per cent,” it said.

The Paradip Port Authority has taken necessary steps in recent months not only for the port customers to do “Business with Ease” as per the initiatives of the Ministry of Shipping but its efforts have taken the port in achieving many records, the statement said.

These include crude oil import crossing 2 MT in July while handling of coking coal was recorded to be 1.23 MT which is not only highest in a single month but for the first time coking coal handing crossed 1 MT in a month, it added.
