As trains to Assam have got disrupted due to the ongoing violence in the region, the Railway Minister, Mr Mukul Roy, has asked the Home Minister, Mr P Chidambaram, and the Assam Chief Minister, Mr Tarun Gogoi, to provide security to stranded passengers — especially in the 54-km badly-affected area between Srirampur ad Salakati Railway stations.

This would help in clearing those trains that have been stranded in the region for more than 24 hours, according to official release.

Mr Roy emphasized that the safety and security of the passengers is uppermost and the movement of passenger trains in the affected areas will be governed with this objective in mind.

The Railways is making all efforts to position affected trains at bigger stations so that the stranded passengers are provided food, water and security.

By Tuesday evening, 26 trains had already been cancelled. In addition, 37 trains have been regulated at various stations on the route, resulting in trains running behind schedule. The Zonal Railways, particularly the North-east Frontier Railway and Eastern Railway, are issuing regular press bulletins informing the public about cancellation and regulation of trains in the affected area.
