The Palakkad division of Southern Railway will conduct a stakeholders' meet in Mangalore in the coming months to discuss the proposal to set up world-class railway station in Mangalore.
Addressing presspersons here on Friday, Mr K.H. Muniyappa, Union Minister of State for Railways, said that the Railways has come out with a proposal to set up a world-class railway station in Mangalore.
Mr S.K. Raina, Divisional Railway Manager, Palakkad division, Southern Railway, said that his division will conduct a stakeholders' meeting in Mangalore in two months.
After getting the feedback of the people on the proposed world-class railway station, a further decision will be taken on this, he said. Mr Muniyappa said that the construction of a second bridge across the River Nethravathi is in progress.
Being built at a cost of Rs 50 crore, the bridge will be ready in another two months.
Intercity train
Earlier, Mr Muniyappa flagged off the Mangalore-Palakkad Intercity Express train. Speaking on the occasion, he said that there are five daily and two weekly train services connecting Mangalore and Palakkad.
Stating that the passenger traffic between these two stations has increased manifold in the past few years, he said the introduction of the direct service will fulfil the long-pending aspirations of the people besides facilitate large number of tourists, pilgrims, and industrial workers. The train will complete the journey by around six hours in each direction, he said.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr N. Yogish Bhat, Deputy Speaker of Karnataka Legislative Assembly, stressed the need for the introduction of an intercity train between Mangalore and Kundapur in Udupi district.
Delivering the welcome address, Mr J.N. Jagannath, Additional General Manager, Southern Railway, said that nearly Rs 1.12 crore has been spent for improving passenger facilities at Mangalore Central Railway Station.
Works to the tune of Rs 1.93 crore are in progress at Mangalore Central. Plans are also there to open a second entry for the station, he added.
