The Tamil Nadu Government has cleared the second phase of the Outer Ring Road project to be implemented at a cost of Rs 1,075 crore.

The 62-km Outer Ring Road is to link the peripheral areas of the city from Vandalur in the south, about 25 km from Chennai on NH 45, to Minjur to the North of Chennai.

According to an official press release, the State Government has passed the order to implement the second phase of the project to link Nemilichery to Minjur over a distance of 32 km. This is to be implemented as a BOT project on annuity basis.

The first phase of the project, 29.5 km linking Vandalur to Nazarathpet on NH 4 to Nemilichery on NH 205 is under implementation in Public-Private Partnership mode, at a cost of Rs 1,081.54 crore on a DBFOT (Design-Build-Fund-Operate-Transfer) basis. This work is to be completed by November 2012. The ORR starts at Vandalur, about 30 km south of Chennai on NH 45, the Grand Southern Trunk Road, and will circle the city connecting NH 4 that leads west and goes on up to Mumbai, NH 5 the link to Andhra Pradesh and NH 205 the Kolkata highway and end at Minjur on the TPP (Tiruvottriyur-Ponneri-Panjetty) Road to the north of Chennai. The release said the State Government has also sanctioned Rs 285 crore for maintaining and repairing roads and bridges across the State.
