After air-conditioners and refrigerators, consumers can now chose washing machines and microwave ovens based on their energy efficiency rankings. This has been made possible after the Star Labelling Programmes, formulated by Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), has been expanded to now include these two home appliance products.
An official statement said, initially, the programme for washing machine and microwave ovens will be implemented on a voluntary basis and will be valid up to December 31, 2020.
Speaking at the event, Secretary, Ministry of Power, AK Bhalla, said that there is a need to improve energy efficiency in household appliances to reduce energy bills of common consumers. “This initiative will promote advancement of technology and energy efficiency in microwave ovens which is becoming a popular household gadget.
“For washing machines, BEE has also expanded the criteria for inclusion of water efficiency, in addition to energy performance for grant of Star Rating.”
