A Bill which seeks to exempt Central institutions from reserving seats under the OBC (other backward castes) quota was introduced in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.
Under the Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Admission) Amendment Bill, 2012, which has been passed by the Rajya Sabha, institutions where the reserved seats for students of scheduled castes (SC) and scheduled tribes (ST) exceeds 50 per cent, no seats need to be reserved for OBC students.
The reservation limit at educational institutes has been fixed at 50 per cent by the Supreme Court.
Further, the Bill also seeks an extension on the time-frame for the implementation of the Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Admissions) Act, allowing for the time required for the creation of additional facilities.
The Minister of Human Resource Development, Mr Kapil Sibal, said the Bill aims at balancing State and Central reservation policies.
