The Karnataka Government has announced that all Government buildings in Bangalore should install rain harvesting mechanism by the end of May.
The decision follows the deluge that the city faced on Friday, when it experienced sudden downpour of over 100 mm of rain.
“The city received 240 mm rain in three days (Thursday to Saturday), a record in the last 40 years,” the Chief Minister, Mr B.S. Yeddyurappa, said after a meeting with several Ministers and senior officials to decide on measures to tackle rain havoc in the city during the monsoon.
Finance
It was decided at the meeting that all Government buildings in the city should install rain harvesting system by May-end, as monsoon hits the State in the beginning of June.
“All departments should find finances for installing RWH systems,” said Mr Suresh Kumar, the State Law Minister.
Water and sewage disconnection
The Government has already set December 31 as deadline for all structures in Bangalore built on an area of 2,400 sq ft and above to install rainwater harvesting systems.
Those who do not meet the deadline could face water and sewage disconnection.
