The Madras High Court has ordered an interim stay on the Tamil Nadu Government's decision to shift the Anna Centenary Library.
A Bench comprising Chief Justice, Mr M.Y. Eqbal, and Mt Justice T.S. Sivagnanam, issued a notice to the government and directed it to file a counter affidavit in six weeks.
The petition was filed by advocate Mr P. Pugalenthi, who said the State Cabinet's decision to shift the library would be “arbitrary, unfair and unreasonable.” He said shifting the library out of the building, constructed with public money, violated the Constitution.
Earlier this week, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Ms J. Jayalalithaa, on had proposed the library in Kotturpuram to be converted into a super-speciality paediatric hospital.
