The government will soon come out with supplementary guidelines for the Prime Minister Awaas Yojana (Urban) to enable private investment in affordable housing.
Addressing reporters on Tuesday, M Venkaiah Naidu, Minister of Urban Development and Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation, said: “We will soon issue guidelines to enable private investments in affordable housing even on private lands under Affordable Housing in Partnership component of PMAY (Urban). We believe to achieve our targets for Housing for All, we will need to partner with the private sector.”
So far, only public sector partnership was allowed under PMAY (Urban).
The government has approved construction of 20,25,573 affordable houses for urban poor so far.
Naidu also said that “with cities now moving forward on the path of well thought out course of infrastructure development, a City Liveability Index will be launched on June 23 at the National Workshop on Urban Transformation.”
The liveability index will measure the quality of life in various cities.
The Ministry will also be announcing the next batch of smart cities on the day.
Talking about achievements of the Ministry in the past three years, he pointed out that a total investment of ₹4,13,475 crore has so far been approved for improving basic urban infrastructure.
Naidu also pointed out that 322 AMRUT and smart cities have acquired credit ratings of which 147 have got investment grade while 163 cities in 18 States and Union territories have initiated measures for mobilising resources through value capture financing tools.
Presidential pollsMeanwhile replying to a query on the issue of the Presidential nominee, Naidu said: “ We have started internal consultations. We are the ruling party and we have to take everyone on board and work towards evolving a broad consensus and seek their support.”
Naidu is part of a three-member committee formed on Monday by BJP President Amit Shah to hold consultations with BJP’s allies as well as Opposition parties on the presidential candidate for the upcoming poll.
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and Home Minister Rajnath Singh are the other two members of the committee.
