Prime Minister Narendra Modi is understood to have reviewed the progress of the government’s agenda to curb black-money and tax evasion as well as the roll out of the Goods and Services Tax (GST).

In a meeting with the Department of Revenue in the Finance Ministry on Tuesday, the Prime Minister is understood to have discussed the disclosures under “Operation Clean Money”.

The meeting was attended by Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia and senior Finance Ministry officials.

The scheme was launched by the Central Board of Direct Taxes this year for e-verification of high value and suspicious cash deposits after the closure of the demonetisation window.

The CBDT shot off e-mails to nearly 18 lakh persons and is now using data analytics for detailed investigations of shortlisted high risk persons. Meanwhile, the Prime Minister is understood to have also called for widening the tax base and bringing in more people under the tax net by curbing black money and benami transactions.
