The Delhi Government has stopped ration supplies of specified food articles to 50,534 below poverty line (BPL) and Antodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) card holders who did not turn up for bio-metric identification and review in 2010.
At present, the National Capital Territory of Delhi has 363,581 BPL card holders, including AAY cards holders. This information was given by the Consumer Affairs Minister, Mr K.V Thomas, in a written answer to the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.
He said that bio-metric machines were used for preparation of fresh above poverty line (APL) cards and reviewing existing BPL/AAY cards. In reply to another question, Mr Thomas said the Government was computerising the Targeted Public Distribution System (TPDS) in a phased manner.
In the first phase, the scheme is being implemented on a pilot basis in three districts each of Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Chhattisgarh and Delhi.
A pilot scheme on smart card-based delivery of essential commodities has already been initiated in Chandigarh and Haryana. Under the scheme, existing ration cards will be replaced by smart cards, he added.
