The West Bengal Cabinet on Monday cleared proposals for payment of compensation of Rs 3 lakh to the kin of those who died in the fire at AMRI, Dhakuria (in south Kolkata). Jobs – in Group C and D category – will be given only in special circumstances.

“While the State government will pay a compensation of Rs 3 lakh to the kin of the deceased; jobs will be given only in case of families who are really in need of it,” the Chief Minister, Ms Mamata Banerjee, told reporters at Writers' Buildings, after a Cabinet meeting.

The compensation will be extended to the families of the two nurses who died in the fire, which led to the death of 88 others at one of the city's premiere healthcare units last Friday.

The Centre has already declared a cash compensation of Rs 2 lakh for kin of the deceased and another Rs 1 lakh for the injured.

While an announcement for a judicial inquiry into the causes of the hospital disaster was made on Saturday, Ms Banerjee today said that the State was yet to zero in on a retired judge to head the inquiry commission.

“A number of inquiry commissions have already been set up by the State Government. We are yet to finalise on the names of those who will look into the AMRI incident,” Ms Banerjee said.
