The number of sick MSMEs has risen to 4,86,291 in 2016 and owe ₹40,642.50 crore to banks as outstandings.
This is much higher than the total number of 4,73,823 sick MSMEs till March 2015 and 4,68,399 in March 2014, and almost double that of 2,22,204 in March 2013, according to the Reserve Bank of India figures.
As per RBI figures, Uttar Pradesh tops among States with close to one lakh (95,989) sick medium, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) that owe ₹3,285.64 crore to scheduled commercial banks, followed by 52,576 sick units in Maharashtra with outstandings of ₹7,188.07 crore and 42,579 units in Gujarat that owe ₹3,214.19 crore to banks, according to information given by MSME Minister Kalraj Mishra in a written reply to Lok Sabha.
“The Ministry has notified a Framework for Revival and Rehabilitation of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises on 29.05.2015….RBI has carried out certain changes in the Framework to make it compatible with the existing regulatory guidelines and issued revised Framework to all Scheduled Commercial Banks on March 17, 2016, Mishra informed Lok Sabha.
However, Mishra said that as per the last MSME Census (Fourth) data collected with reference to base year 2006-07, the number of closed MSMEs in the registered sector was 4.96 lakh, with Tamil Nadu having the highest number at 82,966, followed by Uttar Pradesh at 80,616, Karnataka at 47,581 and Maharashtra at 41,856.
