The general strike called by central trade unions drew a good response on Wednesday here. It was in protest against the Union Government's labour reforms and disinvestment. Payment of minimum wage of Rs 15,000 per month to contract workers was another demand made by the unions.

AITUC State general secretary G. Obulesu and CPI (M) State Secretariat member Ch. Narsinga Rao said the employees and contract workers abstained from work voluntarily in all the industries including Gangavaram Port and Naval Dockyard.

Operations at Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, Visakhapatnam port and other major establishments were hit hard due to the strike, they said.

The managements, which declared a ban on leave and engaged all the officers on 12-hour duty, ensured that critical operations in the major plants were not afffected. The striking unions exempted essential services.

The general strike was near total among banking and insurance sectors. ATMs, petrol bunks, autos, RTC buses and railways functioned normally.
