Temporary hiring is gaining momentum in the country and is poised to witness 20-25 per cent growth this year as sectors like banking, FMCG, telecom, construction, infrastructure and pharma are expanding, according to industry experts.
“With the growth of the economy, prime sectors such as banking, FMCG... are expanding. They recruit temporary staff on a project basis or during their peak business season,” staffing solutions firm TeamLease Services’ Co-Founder and Vice President Ms Rituparna Chakraborty told PTI here.
This trend is growing every year and this year, it is expected to grow by 20-25 per cent, she said. Traditionally, this was known as the ‘thekedari system’ in India, but in the past seven-eight years, it has been recognised as a professionally managed industry, with substantial demand across sectors, she said.
The salaries of these employees differ as per the sectors, function and location. However, it ranges from Rs 8,000 to Rs 20,000 a month, she said.
According to temporary staffing firm Gi Staffing Services’ Regional Head (North), Ms Kumkum Aggarwal, the festival season results in huge demand for products like consumer durables, food and beverages, alcohol and even automobiles.
“This year, we have seen up to a 25-30 per cent increase in hiring of temporary staff during the festivities,” she said.
Graduates between 18-25 years of age, with selling aptitude and knowledge of regional languages, are usually preferred for these positions, Gi Staffing Services’ Regional Head (South) Ms Rajeswari Dhar said.
“We have provided 30 per cent of the additional staff for the telecom sector and 45-50 per cent for the FMCG sector this festive season,” she said.
Talking about the legal aspects, Gi Staffing Services’ VP (Legal and Compliance) Mr Sundeep Arora said there are important prerequisites to keep in mind before taking temporary employees on board.
“These include hiring temps from a contractor who is trustworthy and complies with laws of the land, obtaining appropriate insurance covers to protect our own and temps’ interest during the term of engagement and briefing temps about important aspects/conditions of engagement beforehand,” he explained.
GlobalHunt Director Mr Sunil Goel said as industries are growing, the temporary workers concept has witnessed around 30-35 per cent growth year-on-year. However, he indicated this is a regular phenomenon and not restricted to the festive season.
