Ten non-profit start-ups graduating from N/Core, a Bengaluru based incubator for non-profits, showcased their solutions for poverty alleviation in Bengaluru on Friday.

These start-ups will join 17 others that have graduated from N/Core, since its launch in 2017.

The start-ups, with innovative solutions in education, housing, land and property rights, were selected from over 1,150 applications that included architects, educators, artists and engineers from marquee institutions including IIT-K, NSRCEL, Oxford, LSE, IIM-B, and NIFT.

Potential investors

Of the 27 non-profit start-ups that have graduated from N/Core, 10 from the first cohort have raised ₹15 crore from philanthropists, HNIs (high net worth individuals) and Corporate CSR.

The second cohort is in the process of raising funds. The third cohort, which is currently graduating, includes start-ups Manzil Mystics, Anthill Creations, Slam Out Loud, Eco-Habitats, MyCityMoney, BillionBricks, RightWalk Foundation, Bridges of Sports, Madhi Foundation and the Leadership for Equity. They showcased their solutions to a gathering of over 80 HNIs, philanthropic institutions, CSR heads and sector leaders in Bengaluru, who are potential investors in these start-ups.

Art-based learning

While Slam Out Loud introduces art-based learning to empower poor children to dream big and achieve more, Eco-Habitats has designed tiny houses measuring 300 sq ft that that can be constructed for ₹4.5 lakh and rented out for ₹1,500–2,000 a month, and can accommodate four people.

Anthill integrates teaching elements in playgrounds for children using industrial waste and localized sourcing techniques; Manzil Mystics enables children to express their hopes, ideas, anger and frustrations through music.

This cohort was jointly supported by the Mphasis F1 Foundation (CSR arm of Mphasis), the Omidyar Network, the D.E. Shaw India CSR and mentored by Madhav Chavan, founder of Pratham, Sanjay Purohit, former chairman of Infosys Consulting, S K Jain, co-founder of WestBridge Capital, K R Lakshminarayana, Chief Endowment Officer at the Azim Premji Foundation, among others.

“It requires courage, empathy and willingness to tread on a path less travelled, especially for those who are under served. These young, capable founders have demonstrated exactly that and we are delighted to fuel their aspirations to make a difference at a large scale” said Meenu Bhambhani, VP & Head – CSR, Mphasis.
