The Central Bureau of Investigation has given a clean chit to the Prime Minister’s Office and the Finance Ministry in the spectrum scam.
Appearing before the Joint Parliamentary Committee on spectrum, the CBI Director, Mr A.P. Singh, told the members that there was no evidence to prove that officials or ministers in the PMO or Finance Ministry were involved in the conspiracy behind the 2G spectrum scam.
Mr Singh is learnt to have told the panel that the CBI is still waiting for Letter of Rogatories from certain tax havens on the movement of money involved in the scam.
“There were questions on the progress of various cases on spectrum allotment since 1998. The CBI said that investigation is nearing its end,” a member said.
Apart from the 2G spectrum case, the CBI is investigating irregularities in spectrum allotment in 2002 and the Aircel-Maxis deal, when Mr Dayanidhi Maran was Telecom Minister.
This is the second time that the CBI is appearing before the panel. The Chief Vigilance Commissioner is likely to brief the panel next week. The officials of Enforcement Directorate had also briefed the panel on the scam. The panel is likely to submit its report in the Winter Session of Parliament.
