Hewlett-Packard seems to be pushing the envelope with ‘connectivity' if its latest marketing blitzkrieg aimed at the Asia-Pacific region is any indication.

At the launch of WebOS at ‘A New HP World', an event aimed at the Asia-Pacific market which kicked off here on Wednesday, the company unveiled its vision of a ‘connected life' through its range of hardware and software solutions. WebOS is a mobile operating system developed by Palm Inc before HP bought the operating system in 2010 for $1.2 billion.

While showcasing the connectivity, multi-tasking and productivity capabilities of WebOS through the recently announced HP WebOS slate (or tablet PC products) and smartphones, Mr Steven McArthur, Senior Vice-President, Applications & Services, Personal Systems Group (PSG), said: “HP WebOS is the foundation of our efforts to introduce a unique experience for customers around connected mobility, offering a unified experience for the first time across a variety of devices.”

“HP is experiencing a growing demand for connected devices that help users to realise their passions… (We can) deliver the experience — on individual devices, across all devices and into the cloud,” said Mr Phil McKinney, Vice-President and Chief Technology Officer, PSG.

Eyes desktops too

While the company hinted at bringing the WebOS platform to the desktop, (where Microsoft is a major player), HP declined to elaborate. However, Mr McKinney said the long-term partnership with Microsoft is “good” and HP wanted to leverage the WebOS platform across its products for smooth connectivity. HP is one of Microsoft's biggest customers and said to sell 120 PCs a minute worldwide.

Launches galore

The event also marked the launch of new consumer products such as the HP Pavilion notebook PC line and the TouchSmart610 Consumer PC, besides commercial products such as the HP ProBook series, the HP Compaq 8200 Elite PC and the HP 5570 Thin Client.

The trip was sponsored by HP.
