Lenovo recorded the highest PC shipments in the first quarter of 2012, aided by a large order from the Tamil Nadu Government.

Lenovo's PC shipments grew 64 per cent in the first quarter of 2012. It was followed by HP, which recorded a growth of 21 per cent. However, shipments of Dell PCs declined by 11 per cent, said data from Gartner.

The combined desk-based and mobile PC market in India totalled nearly 2.8 million units in the first quarter of 2012, a 6.6 per cent increase over the first quarter of 2011, according to Gartner

“Consumer buying accounted for 47 per cent of total PC sales in the first quarter of 2012, which is down 3 per cent from the fourth quarter of 2011,” said Mr Vishal Tripathi, Principal Research Analyst at Gartner

White boxes (PC's without registered brand names) declined 20 per cent in the first quarter of 2012 in comparison to the same period last year. White boxes make up 45 per cent of the overall desktop market. Mobile PCs saw a 27 per cent increase over the first quarter of 2011.

In terms of market share estimates for first quarter of 2012, the most significant increase in share in terms of shipments was of Lenovo which almost doubled to 15 per cent.
