IT companies should strive to make products user-friendly as well as cost-effective, said Mr Prithviraj Chavan, Chief Minister of Maharashtra.

Providers should strive to drive down costs so that affordability does not come in the way of implementation, said Mr Chavan at the Nasscom's India Leadership Forum. The way to bring better governance was to force e-governance principles and methodology.

The State Government has already achieved a paperless office in some departments, he said. Bringing about standardisation was also high on the wish list of the Chief Minister.

The Government of Maharashtra is open to sunrise products offered by the IT industry to improve municipal and village administration, he said.

“The Government will continue to be a major buyer of IT services to speed up growth,” said Mr Chavan. “The next evolution will be driven by the higher use of 3G technology, 4G technology and broadband,” he said.

As Mumbai and Pune are markets have already been tapped to a great extent by the IT sector, tier-II cities such as Nagpur, Aurangabad and Nashik can be explored as well by the industry, he said.
