Consumer electronics giant Sony hopes to double its mobile phone sales to over four million units in the current financial year.

“Our target for the current year is to sell over four million handsets and go past ₹5,500 crore in turnover,” said Sachin Rai, Business Head (Xperia), Sony India. Last year, it sold over 2.4 million units and earned ₹3,000 crore.

Sony will expand its reach to over 12,000 retail outlets across the country from the current 8,000 and spend around ₹350 crore on marketing and brand building exercise.

Sony today launched a new range of mobile handsets – Xperia Z2, an Android-based phone priced at ₹50,000. Announcing the launch, Rai said this would be the flagship phone from Sony for 2014.

According to Rai, Sony has an array of mobile phones priced in the range of ₹7,000 to ₹50,000, “and, the new Xperia Z2 would be our flagship model for 2014.”

In the smartphone category, Sony Xperia commands a 10 per cent share, and the brand’s average selling price is ₹12,500.

Elaborating on the new model and its feature, Rai said the new range is dust-resistant and waterproof. Its 20.7 mega pixel camera is complemented image sensor and image processing engine. “One can take picture under water too,” he said.
