Talk about Big Data and you think of large corporations in major metros investing in the technology. But such technology could also be used in smaller cities such as Tiruppur, an export-oriented textile city, said an analyst.
“They will start using Big Data when they see the need. It may take some three to five years for the technology to become user-friendly,” said Mr Karthik Ananth, Director, Zinnov.
Since the early part of 2011, a cluster of export-oriented textile units in Tiruppur have been using ERP (enterprise resource planning) on cloud computing because it is cheaper to operate on the cloud. Around 4,000 units are using it, said Mr Ananth.
He said that people would not use the technology merely because it was there but because it filled a need. Discussing the applications that cloud and big data presented, Mr Ananth said that many new possibilities were being opened up because of the presence of technology and the need to get certain tasks accomplished.
