Wipro has discontinued the making of its branded desktops, laptops and server computers.
In a statement to the exchanges, the company said that after evaluating the changing market scenario, it has decided to focus on strengthening its system integrator or software services business. However, Wipro will provide hardware devices as a part of its business offerings, the company pointed out.
The company started selling its own branded computers from 1989 and most recently with eGo laptops on e-commerce sites such as Flipkart and in physical stores.
Soumitro Ghosh, the recently appointed Senior Vice-President and Head of Wipro Infotech, said in a statement that manufacturing its own branded PCs was not giving it a competitive differentiation in its software services or system integration business.
Wipro added that it will fulfil all devices under warranty and annual maintenance contract obligations and employees working in the hardware departments will be redeployed in the company. However, it did not give out details on which areas of business it will redeploy these employees.
From March this year, Wipro demerged its IT, non-IT business to focus on core IT business into a separate company named Wipro Enterprises Ltd. The demerged entity contributes about 10 per cent to its revenues.
