As the Olympics is set for a grand opening today, Google has come out, as expected, with a doodle commemorating the event.
Clicking on the doodle takes the visitor to the Google search on the ‘London 2012 Opening Ceremony’. The doodle has five sportspersons. The disciplines featured in the doodle are football, swimming, athletics, javelin throw and fencing. A basketball too is featured in the doodle.
Google’s doodles are so popular that there are people who make it a point to see if the search giant has a new doodle. It remains to be seen if Google will come out with a doodle for each day of the event.
Some of the recent popular doodles include the one to commemorate Amelia Earhart's (one of the world’s most celebrated aviatrices) 115th birthday and the one for Robert Moog's 78th birthday, featuring the electronic analog Moog Synthesiser.
The home page of the Firefox browser too has an image - an animated one - to commemorate the Olympics, but unlike the Google doodle, this is not clickable.
The 2012 Summer Olympic Games is the 30th modern Olympic Games and it will continue till August 12, 2012, and London becomes the first city to host the modern Games thrice. The British capital had previously hosted the event in 1908 and 1948.
The 2012 Summer Olympics will see 81 athletes from India taking part in 13 disciplines in the Games that will be held from July 27 to Aug 12. The Indian contingent to London 2012 is a 142-member strong, comprising 81 athletes and 36 coaches. In India, the opening ceremony will be telecast in the early hours of July 28.
