N.R. Narayana Murthy has pipped BCCI's N. Srinivasan and IPL, at least on micro-blogging site Twitter. 'Rohan', 'Rs 1', 'Narayana Murthy' and 'Infosys' were trending more than the controversy-ridden IPL, which didn’t even feature in the top 10 trends on Saturday.
Srinivasan, who heads India Cements, that owns Chennai Super Kings, had been making headlines over the past few days in connection with the IPL betting and spot-fixing allegations.
On Friday, ‘IPL’, ‘BCCI’, ‘Gurunath Meiyappan’ and ‘spot fixing’ were the most discussed topic on the social networking site. However, as soon as the news channels started flashing news of Narayana Murthy returning back to Infosys on Saturday, the tide turned with Murthy trending at the second spot most of the day.
“Finally, something other than BCCI has made it to the headlines….” read a tweet. Another tweet that followed was “Narayana Murthy back as exec chairman in Infosys, which is really a good sign, now we can expect the media will move away from BCCI, NS, IPL!!”
@jhunjhunwala, a fake id created with a picture of one of the country’s richest private investor Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, tweeted that “Like Narayan Murthy N Sreenivasan should quit, then come back as 'Honorary Member' just like his son-in-law for a salary of 1 rupee.”
Another tweet that followed in reply to @jhunjhunwala was “Narayana Murthy should take charge of BCCI.”
Interestingly, K.V. Kamath, who will step down from the post of non-executive chairman to become an Independent Director, was not trending at all!
Murthy’s second innings at Infosys has been hailed as a “much needed step” to rescue the IT major, which slipped in the pecking order to become the third largest player last year.
“K.V. Kamath saab Bank chalana easy hai but Infosys chalane ke liye only Narayana Murthy lagega !” (It is easy to run a bank, only Narayana Murthy can run Infosys) went another tweet.
Murthy’s son, Rohan, was trending because he would join the company as his dad’s executive assistant at an annual package of Re 1.
Meanwhile, India Inc seems to have given NRN’s comeback a miss. Twitter regulars such as Anand Mahindra and Vijay Mallya did not comment on the development.
