Come 2016, you would be able to charge your devices wirelessly from 15 feet away. This is being made possible by a Nasdaq-listed company’s new charging technology that pumps out power to devices in its range, much like a wi-fi router.
At the Consumer Electronic Show, San-Jose headquartered Energous Corp unveiled ‘WattUp’, a technology that uses a mix of RF, Bluetooth and other radio capabilities for over-the-air charging.
“This event at CES 2015 marks a significant achievement for Energous and the industry in showing how wire-free charging can be deployed in everyday living environments…We believe we are the only exhibitor to be demonstrating true wire-free charging technology that lets users roam while their devices charge,” said Stephen Rizzone, Chief Executive Officer of Energous.
WattUp works uses low energy bluetooth to locate compatible devices by. Once contact is established, it sends out RF signals on the same band as Wi-Fi. A small chip embedded in the target device will then convert the signals to DC power. It works with devices that require 10 watts or less of power.
Energous is keen to license this technology to Apple and other device makers.
