Facebook has come up with its first advertising campaign surrounding the brand, to mark the occasion of having one billion active users. The video is titled The Things That Connect Us and was released on October 4.

“We believe that the need to open up and connect is what makes us human. It’s what brings us together. It’s what brings meaning to our lives,” Zuckerberg wrote in a Facebook post.

“Chairs, doorbells, airplanes, bridges, games. These are all things that connect us,” he wrote.

The advertisement illustrates the utility in connecting people with one another. It starts off with an empty red chair suspended in midair in a forest and then moves to people, first an individual and then groups.

“Chairs. Chairs are made so that anyone can sit down and take a break. Anyone can sit on a chair,” a woman’s voice tells the viewer as the advertisement begins.

“And if the chair is large enough, they can sit down together. And tell jokes. Or make up stories. Or just listen. Chairs are for people. And that is why chairs are like Facebook,” it maintains.

The advertisement further adds that doorbells, airplanes, bridges and games like basketball are also some of the things that connect people. Just about anything that brings people together is like Facebook.

At the end, the message is that the universe is vast and dark and often makes us wonder if we are alone. But then there are things that connect people.

The company has, however, not said anything on whether the advertisement will be used for the television or not.
