HCL Infosystems Ltd has won the biggest ever contract from the Unique Identification Authority of India that runs the the ID programme, Aadhaar. The company did not disclose the contract size.

However, a UIDAI top official told Business Line that the contract is worth Rs 2,023 crore, to be paid in 28 instalments. The contract is for seven years.

“HCL Infosystems was the lowest bidder among seven-eight companies,” the official said.

Tata Consultancy Services, Accenture, Tech Mahindra and Wipro were among the other bidders. IBM and Hewlett-Packard India in early 2011 had backed out of the world’s largest project that will enrol 1.2 billion people with a unique ID.

HCL Infosystems will be the managed service provider to implement and manage the Central ID Repository for the Authority. HCL Infosystems’ Bangalore and Noida centres will be used for the services. The Authority will also use the company’s hardware according to the contract, the official said.

The company will be responsible for procurement and installation of the IT infrastructure, implementation of information-security-management systems, and operations support and maintenance. The project also includes technical helpdesk, support services and database administration.

“As the MSP for the project, we are committed to meet and deliver our defined scope of work which broadly covers the implementation and the management of the Central ID Repository for UIDAI,” A.P.S. Bedi, Executive Vice-President, HCL Infosystems Ltd, said.
