HP will be using Intel’s Atom Centerton to develop its low energy Gemini servers.

HP’s Web site says these servers’ energy consumption can be reduced by 89 per cent. The technology also requires 94 per cent less space and reduces costs by 63 per cent.

This could boost server sales for HP, which has witnessed sluggishness in the recent quarter. According to IDC, HP’s revenues for the quarter ended March 31, 2012, stood at $3,460 million. In the same quarter in 2011, its revenues stood at $3,838 million, which represents a revenue loss of 9.8 per cent.

Though HP is still the top server vendor, its market share has fallen slightly from 31.7 per cent for the quarter ended March 31, 2011, to 29.3 per cent a year later. One reason could be stagnation in the server market. IDC said for the quarter ended March 31, 2012, the worldwide server market decreased 2.4 per cent year-on-year to $11.8 billion.

The low-energy server from HP could increase sales because it would enable companies to reduce operating expenditure.
